NOGALES — Soaked toilet seats and derogatory comments are at the heart of a lawsuit that the Nogales Fire Department’s only female firefighter recently filed in federal court.

In her six-page complaint, Marcela Hammond claims she was mistreated by employees and supervisors ever since she joined the city’s fire department in July 2002.

Specifically, she claims male firefighters within the department:

• made inappropriate comments about her and women firefighters in general,
• stuffed wads of lint in her safety equipment,
• accused her of being the reason they were made to take “stupid” sensitivity classes,
• urinated, put pubic hairs and left “girlie” magazines all over the women’s bathroom.

Hammond also alleges fire department officials and human resource did little to resolve the workplace issues when they were brought to light. [A similar complaint another female firefighter brought against the department in 2005 was dismissed.]

Tucson lawyer Jenne Forbes is representing Hammond.
