Power line plan up for public review

WILLCOX — A series of public meetings to decide the route a new power line project will take through southeastern Arizona begins here this week. The final plan will affect utility customers in Arizona’s fastest-growing region and others across the West.

The meeting will be held June 29 and is hosted by Southwestern Power Group, a consortium of energy providers that includes Salt River Project, Tucson Electric Power, Energy Capital Partners and Shell Wind Energy. Their project would bring power to central Arizona and other Western markets.

At least one conservation group, The Wilderness Society, has lauded the project. The group’s renewable energy coordinator, Alex Daue, tells the Arizona Range News, “We support responsible development of renewable energy and hope this transmission line will help bring new wind and solar online in New Mexico and Arizona.”

The new line would begin somewhere near Socorro or Lincoln counties in New Mexico and end in Pinal County, a boomtown for residential and commercial growth before the real estate market melted down.
